Starting 2012 I began saving the the scrap wood during the construction of my frames because I liked the ways the miter cuts looked like a roof. I also like the idea of using "the whole animal", so to speak, to make these houses.
Each house is handmade, lovingly hand painted and they are all one of a kind, each one is unique.
They were made to be a part of my last body of work titled "Nephelococcygia" which was rooted in memory and early influence to my aesthetic, and I mean early, like age 3 to 8 kinda influence. They were made to sit along the tops of my works, sitting on the frames to continue the narrative beyond the frames of the work. My favorite thing is that the houses were made with the "leftovers" of the works themselves.
The idea of "Village in A Can" popped in my head sometime during 2013 while making these guys. Now that my installation for Nepelococcygia is down, I want to offer you all the chance to get a piece of that.
Each house is signed on the bottom. Each can they come in have labels which are numbered and all have a hand touched element, so each can becomes unique as well. The lids of the can are made from the roofs of my 70 handmade house "At The Gates" installation in Cologne, Germany 2009.
